Gemstone jewelry making, how to get a ring made?
Q. I have recently purchased some loose gemstones and am interested in getting some of them made into jewelry (rings and/or pendants). How do I start to find a jewelry designer/maker in my area that will work with my ideas? (I live in the Houston,TX area) Any rules of thumb on pricing of these services? Thanks so much for any and all information.

A. you could try any gem club or silversmithing group. or in your phone directory under manufacturing jewelers. Do your homework, check many manufacturers, find someone you will trust. get one ring made first and see if you like it. If you were in Queensland Australia I would say to come to my shop. You would be most welcome. 10k gold I charge out at $30 per gram plus making and setting stones. Silver is $2 per gram plus making and setting stones.

If you buy a gemstone or gemstone jewelry, are you more likely to buy your birthstone or a different favorite?
Q. Please explain why. I'll choose the best, most detailed response.

A. I am jewelry obsessed yet I have very few pieces with my gemstone. I do have some, but I like the deep colors of some other stones better. Also, I don't tend to wear clothing that would go well with the color of my birthstone so that is a factor.

A. If you are looking to make $500 - $1,000 a month; I would recommend having an eBay store. This way many people will see your website and eBay definitely gives you that website exposure that you deserve.

How to make jewelry to fit a certain gemstone?
Q. My history teacher gives out real gems when we get the highest score on his tests, and I've recently gotten one myself. I picked out my moms favorite color because her birthday is soon, and was wondering how I could go about getting a necklace or a ring to put the stone inside? Should I just go to a jewelry shop and ask them to put the stone inside one? Or...? It's around the size of a pinkie nail, if that makes much a difference, and looks like an average birth stone. Thanks for the feedback!

Can the average guy get away with wearing colored gemstone jewelry?
Q. I've always loved jewelry and gemstones even though I'm a guy. I never really felt comfortable wearing anything like a bracelet, a necklace, or a even a watch. But, I always had wanted a pierced ear, so I few years ago I went and had it done. Until recently I had been alternating between wearing a tiny (3mm) white gold ball stud and a 1/10th of a carat Diamond in white gold. I've gotten bored of that so I started "collecting" the smallest birthstone studs I can find. So far I have a Garnet, a Sapphire, and an Emerald. In your opinion, is it ok for guys to wear colored gems too?
Asked by a random guy - Thu Feb 7 02:14:34 2008 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Absolutley!! Small birthstone studs would look great on guys. Its always nice to see guys wearing more colour especially with their jewelery because most guys just wear boring silver pieces.

What is the procedure to get gemstones and jewelry appraised or authenticated? Does it always cost?
Q. I have some jewelry that I have collected over the years and would like to know the values of the pieces and the process to maybe sell some online. Any advice would be helpful.
Asked by antiqueruby2000 - Sun Mar 11 18:53:11 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. The best way to get your jewelry appraised/authenticated would be to go to a local jeweler in your area. They should be able to look at what you have and give you an idea of the value. As to whether there is a cost, it would probably depend upon how much detail you want from them. Just a quick look and value quote on a couple of pieces might be free, but if you have a lot of pieces and want a detailed appraisal, then I'm sure they would charge you for taking up their valuable time. Best of luck to you!!

A. FUQU! Sounds reeely interesting! I just love answers that I can understand without the use of an Encyclopedia, so I will try to make this one of them! AXINITE: It is a "Burnt Honey Brown" Vitreous Gemstone that is much like Quartz, and is often confused with the same. It can be found in Europe, and North & South America. As its hardness is 6 to 7 it should do just fine for a necklace, and even a bracelet. You can probably find rough and Faceted. If your lucky you can find Cabs and perhaps even tumbled. I am not sure you can find it "Strung" and "Pre-Drilled". You can drill it yourself, but it is quite hard, and you need a diamond bit. if you make one with axinite, send me a picture! :-) Good Luck - Very Best, John W. -… [cont.]

Does a ring have to match your clothes or other jewelry that you are wearing?
Q. I am not a big jewelry person so forgive me if I sound ignorant. Fashion/style experts I need your help and opinions! I found a gemstone ring on ebay I have fallen in love with and is my size. It has three different color gemstones (topaz yellow, pink and blue). However, those colors do not really "match" exactly any other jewelry that I currently have. Would it still look alright and stylish to wear the ring with whatever clothes and jewelry I have on? Or should I look for other pieces of jewelry to wear with the ring that are the same color gemstones (to have a "set" so to speak - which may be difficult) and/or only wear the ring when the color of clothing I am wearing goes with the gemstones as well? I would like to be able to… [cont.]

A. The colors sound like something you could wear with anything light and bright. Which isnt a bad thing. However, you dont want to wear that with say, a crimson sweater and black pants. Also, make sure if you wear other jewelry, that its the same. Keep silver with silver, gold with gold... You dont have to have super matching jewelry either, just wear something simple on your neck or ears and make your ring the bling bling. Hope you enjoy your ring!!

What kind of beaded jewelry would you buy?
Q. I design and make beaded jewelry. While I've had some success with my pieces (both the gemstone and glass beaded pieces), I'm wanting to expand my hobby into an actual business.
