How can I tell a good quality aquamarine gemstone from another?
Q. Im buying a ring, with an aquamarine gemstone and want to know how I can tell a good quality stone from another? Are they measured in carats? How many carats would a good quality aquamarine be?
Asked by Margot D - Mon Nov 3 05:32:18 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. A good one should be pale blue and clear. If it is in natural(uncut)state you would expect to see a hexagonal shape.Chemically and crystallographically it is a form of beryl similar to emerald ( which is green to pale green)I.If the stone is not crystal clear it is of low quality and not fit for jewellery,it is then called Beryl.I can't tell you anything about carat or size;although ,as we all know,a kilogramme beats a milligrame as showing true love!!

A. I know that the more blue the aquamarine is, the better quality it is. Any tinges of green in the stone make it less desirable. Also really light blue, almost clear stones are not worth as much...

A. In general, they are a good selection. Since Tourmaline comes in a large variety of colors it will be excellent to mix with the Black Onyx.

How do you clean an Amethyst gemstone?
Q. I have a gold ring with a large Amethyst gemstone set on the ring. The ring is about 15 years old and through the years it has lost its shine and luster. In short, it doesn't sparkle like it should. How do I clean the gemstone to bring back that shine?
Asked by cinderellanjo - Wed Apr 23 16:12:57 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Gemstones tend to attract grease so it could be that this is the problem. I have attached two links, one gives details on how to safly and effectively clean your jewellery in a safe way, the other is about does and don't for jewellery. They are both worth reading to make your jewellery look as good as possible and give it as long a life as possible, (Jewellery cleaning information). (guide to care of your jewellery). It may be worth taking into account how you are storing this ring. Amethyst can fade if left in the sunlight over extended periods of time, so when you are not wearing it make sure it is stored in a dark place. I hope this has been useful to you.

Q. I have a friend who gave me a gemstone that I love and want to get it made into a necklace. But where do you get the necklaces to fit it or without anything in it already? I have never seen a necklace you can buy with a place for your own gemstone. So any help will be appreciated. I thought about just calling a jewler but wasnt sure. Thought Id try here first, thanks!!

A. First get the stone valued (approximately - if it is a friend and you like the stone anyway - then the actual value is unimportant!) - not for mercenary reasons, but to establish how much you should spend on the necklace to do it justice. If you spend a fortune on the necklace and the stone is not of the highest quality, the necklace will not look satisfactory. Also if the stone is very good, a cheap setting will not do it justice. While you CAN make jewelery yourself, and buy the fittings yourself - it will may a few years to gain all the appropriate skills to make quality jewelery. You can take classes (even 'adult ed' night classes). It's a good and slightly profitable hobby If you just want a necklace, then find a 'manufacturing… [cont.]

What does a jeweler mean by "under-sizes" when referring to gemstone's carat weight?
Q. I was looking at gemstone weight in carats, particularly diamonds. What does a jeweler mean when he or she refers to "under-sizes" and how gemstones of those weights are often a good deal?
Asked by hamburglar - Mon Feb 22 04:46:51 2010 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Stones that do not come up to a particular carat weight are referred to as under weight, for example a stone of 2.96 ct. does not quite equal 3.0 ct. Although to the eye it is almost indistinguishable it does not carry the more salable title of being a 3.0 ct. stone. These are often a very good deal as they are priced at a lower per carat price than stones which make the full weight.

A. Fire opal glows with the fire of the sun: hot yellows, oranges, and reds so bright they look as though they might glow in the dark. Fire opal sometimes does have play of color like other opals but it does not need this to take a starring role in jewelry. Its juicy color is just the right accent to earth tones or black and also looks great paired with other bright tones. Unlike most opal, fire opal is often faceted, so you can choose sparkle as well as color. Because it is light as well as bright, fire opal is especially good for earrings, where even small sizes have a big punch of color. Fire Opal was born in fire, in the ancient volcanoes of Mexico. How should I attach a gemstone(Rose Quartz) to a necklace?
Q. I have shaped and polished a Rose Quartz, but not sure how I should attach it. if I should drill a hole in the Gemstone or glue a clasp?? I dont want to damage the stone. Thanks.
Asked by Kristy - Sat Oct 3 11:17:59 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. With wire-wrapping, you could build a decorative cage for it. Twist two wires together so they form an X, put the twist at the bottom, and work the 4 strands of wire up around the stone in a nice design. I'd use 20ga to 24ga wire for this, depending on the size of the stone. At the top, make a nice loop and anchor it. Wrap the other wires around the base of the loop once or twice, and snip them off. Feel free to email me (click on my avatar for an email link) if you want more detailed instructions. Please be specific with your question, however, if you do. I recently got one request via email that said "Yes, please. Tell me about it." Ummm, yeah, we had to write back and forth a couple of times before I knew what she wanted.
