How to make a crystal smooth?
Q. I have a science project where I have to grow an alum crystal. I've got the growing part fine; i grew it to be about the size of two golfballs put together. The problem is, my teacher grades on the shape and smoothness of the crystal. My crystal is big, but there are tiny litle crystals growing on the outside so it makes it look really ugly and rigid. Any tips on how i could fix that without ruining the whole crystal? Thanksss.

A. Sounds as if you have secondary crystallization, and you may not be able to remove them. Try chipping them away with a needle. When growing crystals, placing a tiny seed crystal on the tip of a thread encourages the growth of a single crystal. Also as crystals form on the sides of the container or the top of the water, pour solution into a clean container and reseat the crystal in fresh solution.

What is the difference between lead crystal and regular crystal?
Q. I was looking at crystal ball online, which was discribed as lead crystal. I have a couple small quartz crystal balls, and I have heard of lead crystal glasses and stuff, so I was just wondering what makes it "lead crystal?" The one I saw online was clear
Asked by duchess0420 - Sun Feb 8 19:06:12 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. The term "lead crystal" is used to describe glass that contains a high proportion of lead oxide in it. Lead oxide is added to increase the refractive index of the glass which results in a glass that is very bright and clear. It does have some disadvantages however as lead glass is softer than normal soda glass and so it scratches quite easily, also it should NEVER be put into a washing up machine as the chemicals used for cleaning will corrode the surface quite quickly and turn it cloudy.. It is a pity that lead glass is referred to as "crystal" which is very confusing because glass is not a crystalline substance. Hope that helps a little.

How do you grow a salt crystal without using hot water?
Q. How do you grow a crystal seed? How long does it take to evaporate and turn into a seed? Can I not use boiling water as my solution? How long will the crystals take to form?
Asked by Dakota. - Wed Apr 8 23:56:53 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. you can leave it in a warm environment so the water can evaporate which would probably take a day to finish, but the time depends on the temperature and surface area etc.

A. Leaded crystal reacts to acids like wine, which can minutely dissolve the lead & (technically) poison the drinker.Lead-free is safer.Unless you plan on drinking wine out if these glasses everyday, then I'd get whatever pattern you like. If your pattern comes in both leaded & lead-free, then I'd get lead-free just to be on the safe eide.

Its not really clay, its silver or gold but in malleable form. So basically you can shape it , you would clay, and then just heat it using a butane burner or what not, then you use a wire brush, and its like 99.9% pure silver or yellow gold. Dont throw the scraps away... the clay is expensive, and plus, the left over silver or gold scraps you can sell to a jeweler, because its basically pure silver or gold. SO i hope this helps... art clay world (artclayworld.com) sells some called art clay. you would really like this...its has tips and techniques on how to use it to make jewerly pieces. A. The crystal is a piece of quartz mounted in a small metal can the size of a bug. It does a curious thing... it vibrates electrically at a speed proportional to it's size. The tiny tiny electrical signal is amplified by an integrated circuit (IC), which uses it as the basis to generate a whole set of computer level voltages, each one going on and off at different speeds. The IC chip is usually designed to use a crystal of a specific speed, and in this way it can accurately (or as accurately as the tolerance of the crystal) generate the clock signals used by a computer. This is also why some watches are more expensive than others, good watches use a crystal with a tighter tolerance, which is more expensive to produce. You really don't… [cont.]

A. One source of confusion is that some types of glass are referred to as crystal (as in lead crystal) but they are not really crystal. True crystals have their atoms arranged in regular rows while the atoms in glass are random. If you shatter a crystal you will see that pieces have flat surfaces. If you shatter glass the pieces have curved surfaces. I doubt that you want to perform that test on your box. Scientists examine crystals by subjecting them to x-rays which form regular patterns that come from the regular arrangement of atoms. The same test on glass would not form such patterns. Again I doubt that you would want to go to that trouble. Going back to the first statement. The question probably is, "Is the box made out of… [cont.]

A. Here's the skinny Every mineral has a crystalline structure. Quartz crystals are organized atoms of silica. Glass is unorganized - they cooled in a manner which did not allow the atoms to self assemble according to the molecular shape. Usually there is a liquid solution that contains the atoms - the holding medium suspends the molecules long enough to create a crystal. Fast cooling molten silica is has no suspension medium. objects, like beads, can be carved from either form of solid. Thisis different form "leaded crystal" which has lead added to the moltem mix, that when carves has a higher reflective index - resulting in a gem like appearance. like a true crystal like a diamond which is spectacular with color.

How to get rid of calcium crystal from toilet bowl?
Q. There are dark stains around the toilet bowl.I found it difficult to remove them.I used Harpic cleaning gel but it doesn't work.Any altenative product that I can use to remove the stain?I believe the stain is caused by not flushing the toilet bowl on a regular basis.I think it is the residue of calcium crystal deposits that caused the stain.

A. The cleaners listed above are what I use. You may also need some manual scrubbing. There are two alternatives. One is a cleaning screen sold in grocery and hardware stores. It's a square about 4"x4". It takes off most of the scale. don't use it with the above cleaning compounds unless you wear gloves. The second is a pumice stone. Just a hunk of pumice also sold at hardware store or janitorial stores. This is probably the last resort for removing that stain. Sounds like a rust stain, so you can also try Whink's Rust remover (hardware stores) saturate paper towel with the stuff and set on top of stain. After about 35 years, my toilet has lost it's porcelain at the water line from all the cleaners and scrubbing. Only solution… [cont.]
