A. Don't know where in Ireland you are, but a friend bought an engagement ring for one of my best friends, his now-wife, at a gorgeous store called Lunn's in Belfast. I know they have a store in Londonderrry, too. Their salespersons are very knowledgeable, and explained the diff. between points and carats, the 4c's (carat, color, clarity and cut) with actual diamonds. They were great with him and the rings were all gorgeous!

A. Karat (gold) is a measure of purity. Carat (gemstones) is a measure of weight. I think you have the two mixed up a bit. Gold is weighed in ounces troy, and currently runs about $655 an ounce for right around 24 kt. I have no idea what the bracelet weighs, nor the purity or quality of craftsmanship, so it's your call if it's worth it.

A. I used to work in a jewelry store and most engagement rings that we sold were in the half carat to full carat range. My ring is a full carat but I inheireted it from my Aunt. A good rule is to not go into debt for the engagement ring. The diamond purchased now can be used as a side diamond for a three diamond ring later. My other advice is buy a diamond that is sparkly and pretty. That sounds obvious but some folks get so wrapped up in what it says on the certificate they don't notice the way the stone looks. Shop around, not just at the mall stores because they have huge markups - which is why they can afford to offer such discounts.

A. Carat isn't the issue so much as cut clarity and color. I've seen 3 carat rings that were ugly because they weren't clear nor were they colorless. Just big, ugly brown colored rocks on fingers. Then I've also seen 1/2 ct. solitaires that cost the exact same as the larger brown ones but because of the color, cut, and clarity were even more gorgeous. Trust me, nobody wants to see a large brown diamond on your finger just for the sake of you saying you've got a 3 ct. Best go with one that is all around great. A nice 1 1/3 ct. with no color, very high clarity and an ideal cut will cost you approximately $5,600 just for the diamond, not including the setting. Shoot for that, not a larger one if you want quality
