A gemstone or gem (also called a precious or semi-precious stone) is a piece of attractive mineral, which—when cut and polished—is used to make jewelry or other adornments. However certain rocks, (such as lapis-lazuli) and organic materials (such as amber or jet) are not minerals, but are still used for jewelry, and are therefore often considered to be gemstones as well. Most gemstones are hard, but some soft minerals are used in jewelry because of their lustre or other physical properties that have aesthetic value. Rarity is another characteristic that lends value to a gemstone. Apart from jewelry, from earliest antiquity until the 19th century engraved gems and hardstone carvings such as cups were major luxury art forms; the carvings of Carl Fabergé were the last significant works in this tradition.

A. I would suggest you try to contact a local club and go on collecting trips with them. There are books with collecting sites, but these can be out of date. Here is a site that has lists of clubs, adds, books and other information you can check out: For polished stones you will have to go to a store :-)

What kind of research project should I do on healing gemstones and crystals?
Q. I was thinking of a project about what gemstones and crystals would be the best to keep in the house for just general illnesses and sicknesses.

A. Wow!!! I believe this is the second (or is it third) time that I actually agree with Skep Doc! lol It is difficult to *prove* a feeling, as everyone feels things differently, even down to describing the feeling differently. The gemstones/crystals that ARE actually used in healing is only one that is medically accepted -- Lithium. And Lithium is extremely difficult to regulate in a patient with BiPolar Disorders. As a Massage Therapist and Mom, I keep Bloodstone in the house as it helps with tons of female disorders, bringing balance to the body. It also helps with any and all blood disorders. But I do know of some people that it just wouldn't work on. And no one can go wrong with a clear Quartz crystal, rough or polished. (bt [cont.]
