From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. A gemstone or gem (also called a precious or semi-precious stone) is a piece of attractive mineral, which—when cut and polished—is used to make jewelry or other adornments. However certain rocks, (such as lapis-lazuli) and organic materials (such as amber or jet) are not minerals, but are still used for jewelry, and are therefore often considered to be gemstones as well. Most gemstones are hard, but some soft minerals are used in jewelry because of their lustre or other physical properties that have aesthetic value. Rarity is another characteristic that lends value to a gemstone. Apart from jewelry, from earliest antiquity until the 19th century engraved gems and hardstone carvings such as cups were major luxury art forms; the carvings of Carl Fabergé were the last significant works in this tradition. We bought a gemstone/mineral identification card, and when we got home, discovered that the IDs for the bottom line are not printed properly. We were able to hold it up to the light and figure out 3 of the 4 items, but the 4th has us baffled. It appears to start with a "W" and end with the word "stone," but really it could be anything that is alphabetically after turquoise. I could read the origin of "Virginia" pretty clearly. The stone is olive green with specks of orange and darker green in it. Any ideas?? Asked by EPZ - Fri Feb 29 21:14:32 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. It sounds like you have a specimen of bloodstone. For a picture and written description go to the link in the source box. I know that the name doesn't start with a letter that comes after T but your description is that of bloodstone.
